My name is Margery and I make handmade textile dolls. I was born in Suriname, and live in Amsterdam.
Working with my hands often leads to long days behind the sewing machine. But it also works very meditative. Life in an automated and computer-crazy society can feel very unreal at times. Sewing is a nice way for me to stay in my natural flow.
I make textile dolls from linen and cotton. I affectionately call the dolls Hidden Jewels. Because they are made by hand, none of the dolls look the same. Each doll is made to order. The dolls are not toys, but more playful and creative pieces of art for young and old. The style of the outfits ranges from lounge and casual wear, to pieces loosely influenced by my culture, Winti. Winti is a spiritual belief system practiced by some of the Afro-Surinamese inhabitants in Suriname. It is the belief in the Supreme Creator Anana Keduaman Keduampon. Aisa Mama is the umbrella under which our ancestral Energies reside. Aisa Mama represents the Feminine Energy in this union.
Hidden Jewels is a name that followed pretty quickly after I made the first dolls. Life is full of Hidden Treasures. I believe that there are enough Hidden Treasures within us that can help us to experience Planet Earth in a more Pure and Authentic way!
